The Project

The Clifford Project was established to give more choice for those young people between 16-25 years of age, with learning difficulties, leaving school or college.

The project sets out to give the students a real experience of work, wherever possible, maximising on their own strengths. To give a balance to work experience, the project sets aside leisure activities to further build team work and self-confidence. These leisure activities include sailing, performing arts and sports. All these activities are run in a safe supervised environment.

The third part of the general structure is the inclusion of life skills training. To find out more about the activities, please see our Training Programme page. From the list it can be seen that the focus of the project is on giving the best possible training and work experience to all of the students involved in the various programmes.

The building was chosen because of its location, on a business park... where work is carried out... the ideal setting for a work experience project.

The project offers two specific programmes.

Skills for Life (S4L)

This programme is more flexible and ideal for students who have more severe difficulties or who may be less work-focused as a result of individual needs. Work experience will still be encouraged but in small groups and with support from the project staff, and greater opportunity to choose from other care areas.

Way to Work (W2W)

This programme focuses on young people who have mild to moderate learning difficulties and are work focused. The timetable will consist of a build up to three days work focus with an employer, and the remainder focusing on other skills to include core modules and life skills, leading to greater independence.

In Control

The Clifford Project is proud to pilot a new programme for young people with learning disabilities with Staffordshire Social Services. The pilot programme will allow 6 of our young people to self assess themselves for the level of support and care that they need, and after going through this with the help of social services and the project, and once the financial resouces have been allocated, then these 6 young people will be able to do the things that they want to do within their personalised plan, whether it is social, sporting, or even the activities here at the project. The pilot commences in September and will run until April next year. Watch this space for more developments - www.in-control.org.uk
