Training Programme

[Click on a bubble for more information]

There are many skills that we need to have so that we can become more independent in leading our own lives. This curriculum has been designed to help us to look at the skills we need so that we can have more control and choice over our own lives.

We may need extra help along the way to do many things - it may also be the case that we can help someone else because they have not yet mastered a skill in full - however we are all important and are valuable.  We are here therefore at The Clifford Project to learn more about how we can live our lives and be the best that we can be, and how having a disability/additional need/a specific learning need makes us unique.  We are here to take our place in the world... and to make a difference.

Our particular focus at The Clifford Project is to give all young people the opportunity to grow and develop; to reach full potential, with a particular focus on...Work Skills, Independent/Supported Living Skills, Recreation and Leisure, Personal/Social/Health Issues and Basic Skills.

All the curriculum areas are geared towards meeting learning targets in these areas, building towards increased life skills and the ability to manage life in a successful way.

We hope to encourage young people with additional needs to recognise, and gain understanding of, their own special needs and those of others, recognising their strengths and abilities and moving them realistically to achieve goals they have set for their futures.

Residentials

Spanish Residential
On the 28th of February after a lot of planning and organising a group of students and staff from the project went off to Benidorm in Spain on the project's first residential abroad. We had a fantastic time and really didn't want to come back but the Euros had run out and the cases were full. We stayed in the Hotel Peubelo in Benidorm. Could highly recommend it for value and comfort and for meeting our needs. The restaurant provided excellent food and facilities and the staff were friendly. There were plenty of friendly English faces and located in the centre were lots of shops and cafe's nearby. We travelled with Regent Travel of Stone who were excellent and provided us with the very best of service door to door. The sun did shine for us and did us the world of good. We did however return to dismal grey Birmingham but we managed to escape the snow!

United Theatre Company

The United Theatre Company was formed in September 2002 and brings together young people with learning disabilities on a Tuesday evening (term time). We meet 6 - 8 pm.Young people access a range of performing art skills via workshops and theatre visits. We aim to produce an annual performance, and previous years have seen productions including 'Joseph', 'All Aboard' and 'Grease'.  A pantomime is being planned for Christmas 2006.  The company is supported by volunteers and many of the Clifford Project students access it weekly, along with the staff.

Basic skills

For Skills for Life (S4L) students Basic Skills is included and embedded into all the learning programmes in a creative way.  College courses are also optional, and IT is embedded into the curriculum using our in-house IT suite.

For the Way to Work (W2W) students, more structured basic skills sessions are available if requested, using the Skills for Life Adult Literacy and Numeracy curriculum.

Students are also encouraged to attend part-time college courses, gaining support from our Tutors, particularly in the area of IT, using the Stone IT centre.

Independent/Supported Living

This area of the curriculum identifies all those areas that we need to master if, as young people, we are going to live more independently. It also needs to be recognised how important is the partnership between home and the project in encouraging young people to be consistent and focused in practising these skills. We would hope for a range of outcomes.

1 Living at home with parents/carers but taking more responsibility for belongings, personal health, money etc. within the home context.
2 Living at home but having periods away from home on Respite/Residential, where these skills can be practised and exercised fully.
3 Living at home with full-time staff continuing to support daily needs. Accessing community facilities and living with a group of young people who will continue to receive training and assistance in making choices and decisions.
4 Living in a supported living environment with a number of other young people with additional needs in the local community, with staff living in or available on-call as required by the young people living in the house. Young people are responsible for the house management and decisions made, assisted by staff, but tenants in their own right.

5 Living independently with flat-mate/partner with the opportunity to have support as required.
